Domaining

The art of domains, also known as domaining.  I've been in this internet game a while.  You start to get a feel about some things.  Back in the day, I'd even venture to say I feel for Rick's blog's cool-aide.  But as time has progressed, I've started to think there is a slight logic to his insanity.

Perhaps not as tantamount as he makes it out to be, but then again he use to sell 1-800 numbers.  So he knows a thing or two about marketing.  Regardless, domains are one of those things that need no explaining.

My site is hosted on my name .com.  Not that it matters, it could of been hosted on a .me, .io, .xzy.

The game has changed since when it first started anyways.  There was no cell phones, there was no google.  There was randomly typing things into the URL bar and hoping you'd land where you wanted.

That's why some of those domains where so insanely valuable.  Imagine how many people a day where typing in se.com?

That changed as google took over.  They nurfed the value of a domain, since now people went to google.com and typed in sex.

Then for a while there, the domains had some merit in google, exact match domains (EMD's).  They would just sort of rank a bit higher for a bit, some did better than others.

That had some merit, but the thing that was the icing on the cake was when cellphones came out.  Apps overtook everything, who was going near a URL bar.  Let alone a browser.

The value of a domain went poof.

Then out of no where, there starts to be a market for them again.  Perhaps because for once, people started using the URL bar again.  So the art of domaining lives on.  Maybe not as blockbuster, yet.

But it'll get there I think.
